The next day was the day before
the eclipse and we retraced our steps back to Punta Arenas. Along the way,
we stopped at the Otway Sound Penguin Colony. Here, up to 10,000 Magellanic
penguins nest. We saw a couple of hundred penguins with the others out to
sea. The rest of our group joined us. Dan Hurley even came dressed in a
tuxedo to better commune with the penguins. |

Upon arriving at Punta Arenas, we checked into
the Hotel Finis Terrae where we heard an evening lecture on Antarctica. The
next morning was Eclipse Day and we received our tickets at the morning
briefing. Then, it was on to the airport for our charter flight over
Antarctica. |

The initial part
of the flight was uneventful, as clouds covered much of the coast of
Antarctica. One real treat was to see the shadow of the contrail of the
plane on the clouds below ending in The Glory. This is the anti-solar
point and a rainbow forms around the shadow of the plane.
