We overnighted in Puerto Natales
and headed out early the next day to visit the Serrano and Balamceda
Glaciers. Traveling by boat, we traveled up the Esperanza Fjord where we saw
a colony of Cormorants nesting on the side of a cliff. It was overcast and
lightly raining when we reached the Serrano Glacier. A hike of 1.2 km
brought us to the base of the magnificent glacier. Despite the haze and
occasional light rain, it was a wonderful view. |

After leaving the Serrano Glacier, we proceed
back down the fjord to the Balmaceda Glacier. Although we did not leave the
boat, this glacier also provided a breathtaking view as it spilled down into
the fjord. We stopped for lunch on the way back at the Estancia Perales
ranch. |

The next day we finished our journey to Torres
del Paine arriving at the Hosteria las Torres in the evening. This hotel
sits at the base of the glorious Torres del Paine, affording those of us
lucky enough to have rooms facing west a view of the mountains out our
windows. The following morning we aroused to horses galloping through the
meadow as we prepared for our day in the National Park. |

The day turned out to be a rare, brilliant sunny
day. If there were one day to save up for good weather, this was it. We
started our day driving alongside the Rio Paine, visiting herds of guanacos,
an animal related to the llama. We also visited waterfalls along the way,
including the Rio Paine Waterfall. We saw hundreds of guanacos and watched a
couple of young males fighting for supremacy. We eventually arrived at the
Laguna Azul and stopped for lunch. Here we had another wonderful view of
Torres del Paine from a different angle. |
