Sky &
Telescope
editor
and symposium coordinator, David Tytell is an award-winning public speaker with degrees in
planetary science and science journalism. A self-professed
large-telescope addict, he has observed with some of the world’s
most premier instruments including Palomar, Lick, Keck, and the
Hubble Space Telescope. Currently serving as Web producer for
Sky & Telescope’s website, SkyTonight.com, Dave’s

Jim Bell |
|
|
|
| |
If you’ve ever gasped with amazement at an image of Mars
shot by NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity,
you have Jim Bell’s cameras to thank. Jim is a Cornell
University professor and the lead scientist for the color
panoramic cameras on the Mars rovers. A frequent contributor to
Sky & Telescope, his research focuses on the geology of
planets, asteroids, and comets using telescopes and spacecraft.
He also authored the pictorial history of the rover missions,
Postcards from Mars. Jim will be sharing the most beautiful,
breathtaking views of the Red Planet that his team’s cameras
have produced. |

Sue French |
|
|
|
|
|
|
It’s unusual to find an
accomplished stargazer who both knows the sky intimately and has
a thorough command of the underlying astrophysics. Sky &
Telescope contributing editor Sue French has gained a
worldwide following in both capacities. In the mid-1990s her
writing skills came to the attention of the editors at Sky &
Telescope, and she soon appeared monthly in the magazine.
She currently writes the Deep-Sky Wonders column in S&T,
as well as a star-hopping column in Sky & Telescope’s
sister publication, Night Sky. Her expert opinions and
tips also appear in her book, Celestial Sampler: 60
Small-Scope Tours for Starlit Nights. This self-proclaimed
“Queen of the Darkness” currently owns seven telescopes. Sue
will be on hand to provide tips and advice for making the most
of your observing sessions, including our Perseid meteor
watches. |

Tony and Daphne Hallas |
|
|
|
| |
Few
astrophotographers are more recognized and respected than Sky
& Telescope contributing photographers Tony and Daphne
Hallas. The self-taught astronomical imaging duo has been
shooting the sky since 1987. Between the two of them, they have
more than three decades of photography experience, specializing
in all aspects of image processing. In 2001 the pair was awarded
the prestigious Clyde Tombaugh award for technical innovation in
astronomy by the Riverside Telescope Maker’s Conference. Samples
of their work are found at astrophoto.com. The Hallas’s
will be conducting astroimaging workshops onboard the Regal
Princess for photographers of all skill levels, and will
help you learn how to bring out the magic in your telescopic
pictures. |

Stephen P. Maran |
|
|

|
|
Frequent
Sky & Telescope author Steve Maran earned his Ph.D.
at the University of Michigan and spent 35 years as an
astronomer at NASA. He’s the author of Astronomy for Dummies,
the editor of the Astronomy & Astrophysics Encyclopedia,
and press officer of the American Astronomical Society. Minor
planet 9768 bears his name and the Astronomical Society of the
Pacific honored him with its Klumpke-Roberts Award for
outstanding contributions to the public understanding and
appreciation of astronomy. According to the Dallas Morning News,
“Dr. Maran takes up where Carl Sagan left off, telling the story
of space to anyone who’s interested. Except that Dr. Maran is
funnier.”
Steve will be sharing the
latest astronomical discoveries made by the
Hubble Space Telescope, and more. |
