Vladivostok

As our fellow eclipse travelers continue their travels onward, we continue exploration of Vladivostok. Start by visiting Vladivostok’s Fortress Museum that until recently was the city’s sea approach defense system. The museum itself is in the reconstructed 1862 Bezymianaya Battery, the first coastal battery in Vladivostok. Heavily shelled during the Russo-Japanese War, it was disarmed in 1923 and used as an auto repair plant. During the ‘30s, Stalin had a newer coastal battery built on outlying Russkii Island. The Vladivostok defensive region was abolished in 1993 and the fortress became a museum.
Next visit the Antique Auto Museum that displays restored and vintage Soviet vehicles from the 1930s to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Captured German and Japanese vehicles from World War II are found here as well as Russian motorcycles, military jeeps, trucks and limousines.
Also visit the Vladivostok Naval Cemetery where the city’s most prominent citizens are buried. The cemetery is also the final resting place of some of the Czech Expeditionary Forces from the Civil War, and many WWII Japanese prisoners of war, who were forced to build tunnels and fortifications under the city.
After lunch at a local restaurant, depart for a walk along Korabelno-Naberezhnaya Embankment, which includes the Pacific Navy War Memorial with the C-56 submarine, the Monument to the First Settlers and the Krasny Vympel steamboat. The C-56 submarine sailed in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, sinking ten enemy ships during WWII. It is interesting to enter the sub and imagine what life was like for the submariners.
This afternoon we take a boat tour of Golden Horn Bay. After the boat tour, return to the hotel for time to relax before dinner this evening.
.
