Transit of Venus
in Rome
Itinerary
Page 1 |

Students at Vassar
College acquired this image of the transit of Venus on December 6,
1882. Small specks on the Sun’s face are photographic flaws, not
sunspots. |

UNLIKE
the
sudden darkness of a
total
eclipse of the Sun, which lasts only a few
minutes, transits of Venus typically play
out
slowly
over several hours. On June 8, 2004, the
planet’s ink-black silhouette will edge onto
the solar disk over about 20 minutes and,
after a 51⁄2 hour march across the disk,
will take another 20 minutes to slide off.
From Rome, the transit begins
at 7:20 a.m. local daylight time and ends at
1:24 p.m.
The
planet’s graceful transit will be
appreciated best when viewed through
a telescope with a
safe solar filter, and Sky & Telescope
will make sure plenty of suitably
equipped instruments
are
set up at our observing site for this
purpose. Travelers are encouraged to bring their
own binoculars, telescopes, and solar filters too.
TravelQuest and Sky & Telescope will provide
additional information closer to the tour’s
departure date.

Once a monastery, the Domus Sessoriana

mosaic floors and ceilings.

City on the hotel’s Roof Terrace before walking
to a favorite restaurant for an evening of Roman
culinary delights.

Breakfast/Lunch
Ancient & Baroque Rome Walking Tour |
| |
|
Today we will break into small groups to begin
our walk through Roman history, beginning at
the Colosseum, where 50,000 spectators came
to see gory games between wild animals and
gladiators. Our guide will then take us through
the famed Roman Forum, a complex of
squares with colonnade ruins and temples,
which was the core of ancient Rome. From the
Forum we will walk up to the Campidoglio,
the epicenter of Roman government since the
city began.
After lunch overlooking the city, we
will walk to the wonderfully |

preserved
Pantheon. The massive columns that front the
building and its unique proportions make it an
architectural masterpiece. From there, we will
wander narrow streets to a small piazza dominated
by the rushing waters and sculpted marble
sea creatures of the famous Trevi Fountain -
toss in a coin to assure your return to
Rome! Our last stop of the day will be at the
impressive Spanish Steps, where the crowd is
always lively. We’ll have time for an espresso or
gelato before returning to the hotel. Enjoy this
evening in Rome on your own. |
