Rosewell UFO Museum - Goddard Collection

Dr. Robert H.
        Goddard

Dr. Robert H. Goddard (October 5, 1882 - August 10, 1945) is best known for being the father of modern rocketry. Because of his pioneering theoretical and experimental research, Dr. Goddard created many techniques that are still used in rockets.
On March 16, 1926, Goddard successfully launched the world's first flight of a liquid-propelled rocket. This is often compared in its significance to the Wright Brothers first flight in 1903. Another important first came on July 17, 1929, when Goddard tested the first rocket to carry scientific instruments. The rocket carried a barometer and a camera.

After breakfast and checkout,we’ll travel to Roswell, New Mexico. It was here, in the first week of July 1947, that something crashed in the desert. The next day, a New Mexico rancher saddled up his horse and rode out with others to check on his sheep after a fierce thunderstorm the night before. As they rode along, they began to notice unusual metal debris scattered over a large area. Upon further inspection, they saw that a shallow trench, several hundred feet long, had been gouged into the land. The rest of the story is now referred to as the infamous “Roswell Incident.” We’ll learn all about it at the UFO Museum and take time to browse the otherworldly gift shop. After lunch we’ll visit the Roswell Museum and its Robert H. Goddard Collection. Some of humankind’s earliest steps toward space travel began in Roswell, where Goddard refined his liquid-fuel

technology for 11 years. In this special collection we’ll see the actual rockets that made history, walk through the workshop where they were built, and read Goddard’s own accounts of his successes and failures. After returning to Albuquerque, join us this evening for a farewell dinner.
