IN THE CANARY ISLANDS

Sunday, Nov. 16 - Friday, Nov. 21

Upon arrival in Tenerife in the Canary Islands, tranfer to our hotel in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, our accommodations
for two nights. A tour of the city includes a visit to the Observatorio de Teide, a center for the study of astrophysics, under the coordination of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) in La Laguna. Our stay in Tenerife coincides with the spectacular  Leonid meteor shower which can be seen from the island. A two-night excursion to the nearby island of La Palma explores flourishing orchards and plantations scattered across a beautiful volcanic  coastline. Visit the Parque Nacional de la Caldera de
Taburiente for a tour of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, one of the world’s most important observatories and home to the Isaac Newton Telescope. Fly to the nearby island of Gran Canaria, where we join fellow travelers and embark Orion and set sail.

  DAY 14 Tues, Dec. 2
ST. HELENA (U.K.)

Call today at the island of St. Helena, located 1,200 miles off the southwest coast of Africa.  Like Ascension, St Helena was discovered by Portuguese seafarers, and for many years the island served as an important stop for trade ships sailing around the Cape of Good Hope.  Edmond Halley first mapped the southern stars here in 1676 and Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here in 1815 and remained on the island until his death in 1821.  A tour of St. Helena includes Jamestown, the island's capital, and Longwood House, Napoleon's residence during his exile.

DAY 15 to Day 18  Wed, Dec. 2 to Fri, Dec. 5
CRUISING THE SOUTH ATLANTIC

Continue our journey cruising the South Atlantic, enjoying the amenities of the ship and talks by our study leaders.

Day 19 Sat, Dec. 6
TRISTAN DA CUNHA ISLAND (U.K.)

Orion anchors off the coast of Tristan da
Cunha, considered to be the most remote inhabited island in the world. Located halfway between South America and South Africa, this small volcanic island boasts a population of 300, who sustain themselves by fishing and farming. In 1961 a volcanic eruption forced the evacuation of the entire island, but almost all
of the residents chose to return. The island is an ornithologist’s dream, with fourteen different types of petrel found here, including the greater shearwater, the prion, and the storm petrel. Rockhopper penguins and wandering albatross are also common. Visit the settlement of Edinburgh, set on a rugged volcanic cone rising 6,760 feet above sea level.

  Day 20 Sun, Dec. 7
NIGHTINGALE ISLAND (U.K.)

Arrive at Nightingale Island, an island completely uninhabited by humans. Nightingale is home to millions of birds, including greater  South Georgia shearwaters, Tristan buntings, penguins, and the rare yellow-billed albatross.

Day 21 Mon, Dec. 8 to Thu, Dec. 11
AT SEA

Attend lectures, watch for marine mammals and seabirds, and relax aboard ship as Orion cruises south to the island of South Georgia.

Day 22 to Day 25 Fri, Dec. 12 to Mon, Dec. 15
SOUTH GEORGIA (U.K.)

Spend four days exploring the rugged, icebound area in and around the island of South Georgia. Once ravaged by the South Atlantic whaling industry, the waters of South Georgia are now strictly protected and harbor abundant numbers of elephant seals, fur seals, and king penguins. Visit the Bay of Isles, home to a massive rookery of  king penguins; Albatross Island, a paradise for grey-headed, black-browed, light-mantled sooty, and wandering albatross; and the town of Grytviken, where renowned Antarctica explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton is buried in the small cemetery beyond the abandoned whaling station.
