Day 2 Thur, Nov. 20
LAS PALMAS, GRAN CANARIA, CANARY ISLANDS (SPAIN)
    Arrive in Las Palmas and transfer to Hotel
Maspalomas Oasis for the night. Enjoy a welcome reception with fellow travelers.

Day 3 Fri,  Nov. 21
LAS PALMAS | EMBARKATION

    Explore Las Palmas, including the Caldera de
Taburiente, one of the world’s largest craters,
 
  and several of the island’s charming villages. Transfer to the port in the afternoon to embark
Orion and set sail.
   
  Day 4 and 5  Sat, Nov. 22 & Sun, Nov. 23
AT SEA

    Spend two days at sea attending lectures and enjoying the amenities of the ship.
   
  Day 6 Mon, Nov. 24
SAO VICENTE, CAPE VERDE ISLANDS

    Call at Sao Vicente in the Cape Verde Islands, an archipelago of 14 arid, volcanic islands 400 miles off the coast of West Africa. Discovered in 1460 by Portuguese explorers, this tiny nation is populated by descendants of African and European settlers who have developed their own distinctive artistic traditions. Spend the day enjoying the island’s striking mountain scenery and relaxing on its beautiful beaches.
   
  Day 7 to Day 10 Tue, Nov. 25 to Fri, Nov. 28
AT SEA

    Attend lectures and relax aboard ship as Orion sets a southwesterly course through the Atlantic.
   
  Day 11 Sat, Nov. 29
ASCENSION (U.K.)

    Orion calls at Ascension, a British overseas territory. Discovered by the Portuguese in
1501, the island is renowned for its green sea turtles. It is also the most important breeding
place for seabirds in the tropical Atlantic such as sooty terns, boobies, the rare Ascension frigate bird, Boatswain birds, petrels, and noddies.  NASA astronauts learned to drive the Lunar Rover on Ascension's moon-like terrain.
 

 

 

Day 12 and 13 Sun, Nov 30 and Mon, Dec 1
AT SEA

    As Orion sails southward to St. Helena, watch for seabirds and marine life off the ship's decks.
