Sabratha |
|
| |
After breakfast,
we’ll travel to the Roman ruins of Sabratha. A World Heritage Site,
Sabratha was founded by the Canaanites in the 6th-century B.C., and
ruled by Carthage, Phoenicia, Nomadic and then by Rome in 46 B.C.
The most spectacular site here is the Theatre, built during the
reign of the Emperor Commodes (161-192 A.D.), with its three-story
backdrop of columns. Other monuments and areas of interest that we
will visit include the Temple of Liber Pater, the Basilica of
Justine, the Capitoleum, the Temple of Serapis, the Temple of
Hercules and the Temple of Isis. We’ll also include a visit to the
museum. After lunch, we’ll return to Tripoli for an evening of

Leptis Magna - Benghazi |
|
| |
After an
early breakfast, we’ll drive east to Leptis Magna, another World
Heritage Site, acknowledged as the best-preserved and most extensive
Roman ruins in the Mediterranean. One of Leptis’ signature monuments is
the Arch of Septimus Severus, built in 203 AD to commemorate the emperor
and to mark his visit to his native city. One of the social hubs of the
city were the Hadrian Baths, which gives us a glimpse of the utmost
luxury in which Romans lived at that time.
Originally a Berber settlement, then made into a
trading port by the Phoenicians, Leptis was conquered in the 6th-century
B.C. under the Auspices of Carthage. The city grew wealthy from slaves,
ivory and precious metals, as well as by the rich agricultural land
surrounding it. Leptis Magna later became a great metropolis under the
Romans before falling into decline, never to regain its former glory. By
the 11th century the city was abandoned to the encroaching
sand dunes. In the 20th-century, when excavations began, archaeologists
found that the sand dunes had preserved the ruins extremely well. This
evening, we’ll fly from Tripoli to Benghazi, where we will spend the
night before traveling to our Eclipse Camp. |
