Arrive Naples, Italy

Arrive in Naples airport according to your own schedule, where you will be met and transferred to our downtown Naples hotel. Naples is not only picturesque, it is also one of the world’s greatest cultural centers, filled with extraordinary works of art and architecture in the classical Greek and Roman styles. Greeks founded the city of Naples back in the 7th century BC, and the ancient design of the city still exists today. Three long parallel streets cross the center of Naples, connected by many small, narrow streets lined with shops, fruit stands, espresso cafes, grocery stores and galleries.
Later this afternoon, we will gather to meet our fellow travelers and international volcano researcher Donna O’Meara, for an informative lecture on the history of Mt. Vesuvius, one of Europe’s most famous active volcanoes. This evening, join us at a local restaurant on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius for dinner, complemented by local wine grown in the lava-rich soil.

Overnight: Hotel Jolly Ambassador (3 nights)

  DAY 2 Sat, September 15                                                                                  B/L
Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii

After breakfast, our entire morning will be dedicated to Mt. Vesuvius. We will explore its lava-covered slopes and the smoking craters of this omnipresent volcano. Seismological conditions permitting, we will get as close to the main crater as possible to experience the fierce power within. After lunch we will take a guided tour of the ancient ruins of Pompeii for a better understanding of how Vesuvius transformed this once thriving Roman resort into a ‘moment in time’. Pompeii’s ruins are extensive, providing a detailed view of life nearly 2000 years ago. Of particular interest are the still wonderfully preserved colorful murals and mosaic designs in some of the wealthy homes of the time. This evening will be free to explore and enjoy dinner on your own.

  Day 3 Sun, September 16                                                                                 B
Sorrento

Today is a day filled with enticing options. After breakfast, our included tour will take us south to picturesque Sorrento, where you can stroll among shops and various scenic overlooks.
Other options for the day might include taking the hydrofoil to the island gem, Capri. For those choosing to spend the day in Naples, you can visit the famous Aquarium founded in 1827, featuring more than 200 marine species, or take in the art and cultural history at The Royal Palace. Dinner is on your own.

  Day 4 Mon, September 17                                                                                B/D
Sicily - Taormina and Mazzaró

This morning we bid farewell to Naples and transfer to the airport for our short flight to Catania. We will then transfer by motorcoach to our hotel at the seaside resort of Mazzaró. After check-in, we will depart for an excursion to the historic hilltop town of Taormina to explore its local shops and cafes. Called the jewel of Sicily, Taormina is incredibly picturesque, situated high above the sea. This evening in Taormina, we’ll enjoy dinner and a volcano question & answer session with Donna.

Overnight: Hotel Lido Caparena (2 nights)

  Day 5 Tue, September 18                                                                                 B/L
Mount Etna

This morning we will drive up famous Mt. Etna, passing citrus groves that blanket its lower slopes still showing the ancient water channels cut through the groves. As we climb higher the landscape changes to orchards of apple, pistachio, hazelnut and vineyards. Eighteenth century patrician manor homes with their grand staircases, elaborate fountains, ornate tiled roofs and walls of blue, pink and green line the route. Mount Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe, its elevation reaching more than 3200 meters (10,560 ft) and its base having a circumference of 150 kilometers (93 miles). Recent volcanic activity has resulted in dramatic displays of steam and gas, along with some fantastic red lava flows.
Leaving our motorcoach, we will continue our ascent by cable car to 2700 meters (9000 ft), where four-wheel drive vehicles will take us over a lunar
landscape in search of venting craters. Surrounded by barren brown and grey lava fields - cooled remnants of past eruptions - we’ll explore Etna’s summit craters on foot (weather and volcanic activity permitting). After a full day of exploration on the volcano we will enjoy dinner at a restaurant located on the slopes of Mt. Etna, featuring local wines made from grapes grown in Etna’s rich volcanic soil.

  Day 6 Wed, September 19                                                                               B/L/D
Vulcano and Lipari Islands

After breakfast, we will travel by motor coach to the seaport of Milazzo where we will board a private boat to begin our journey through the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily. Our first stop will be at the island of Vulcano, where we will have lunch and then join Donna on a hike along the slopes of Vulcano to explore as conditions permit, to see its small fumaroles and hot mud pools. Later this afternoon we’ll return to our boat and continue on to the island of Lipari for dinner and overnight.

  Overnight: Hotel Carasco

  Day 7 Thu, September 20                                                                                B/L/D
Lipari and Stromboli Islands

Our tour of Lipari today begins with a visit to Museo Archeologico Eoliano, which offers insight into the volcanic origins of this island and is considered one of the best archeological museums
in Europe. This afternoon, we continue our island hop to Stromboli.
Northernmost in the archipelago, Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes on earth. By day, it's easy to forget that Stromboli is the tip of a volcano protruding through the clear, blue Mediterranean Sea. Against a daytime sky, its flaming lava and chunks of rock being belched from the crater are practically invisible, although it is not unusual to hear an occasional BOOM! After dark, Stromboli’s fire comes alive for everyone to behold. Following dinner this evening we will board a private boat for an excursion around the island to view volcanic activity from the sea,
a truly unforgettable sight.

  Overnight: Hotel Sciara (2 nights)

  Day 8 Fri, September 21                                                                                  B
Free Day in Stromboli and Optional Hike

Enjoy the day at leisure to relax and write postcards, swim and explore the area on your own. This afternoon you may choose to join Donna on an informative walk around the base of Stromboli or join an optional hike up the volcano, accompanied by a licensed volcano guide.

  Day 9 Sat, September 22                                                                                  B/D
Stromboli Island - Catania, Sicily
