Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
Thjórsádalur Valley & the Highlands
After
check-out this morning, we will drive to the valley of Thjórsárdalur,
famous for its beautiful waterfalls and Viking ruins. We’ll stop at the
waterfall Hjálparfoss, framed in twisted basalt columns. Enroute to our
lunch in the Highlands Center of Hrauneyjar we’ll see the volcano Mt.
Hekla, which last erupted in February 2000. After lunch, we’ll travel
farther inland to get a better idea of the deserted landscape that
represents over half of Iceland. Later afternoon
we’ll arrive at the village of Hella,
pop. 500, and
Guesthouse Mosfell, our
home base for the next two nights.
After dinner, join us for a third night of
aurora viewing and stargazing near our hotel.

Southshore and the Sagas
Today’s excursion will begin with a walk behind the graceful

preserved in their original state, filled with a vast collection
of household items depicting Iceland’s past. Continuing farther
east, we’ll see the Myrdalsjökull glacier, and if conditions
permit we’ll stop at the glacial tongue of Solheimajokull. After
lunch in the beautiful village of Vík, we’ll journey to the black
volcanic lava beach of Reynisfjara, with massive basalt columns
and rock formations. We will conclude our day of sightseeing with
a visit to the Saga Museum for a guided tour of Iceland’s history.
