  Hawaiian Fire and Skies Itinerary

  Day 7 Fri, July 8                                                                                      B/D
Hilo / Subaru Telescope tour / Mauna Kea Observing

The morning is free to spend exploring Hilo on your own. Downtown (a 20 minute walk) offers a relaxed atmosphere with nice shops and cafes. You can also visit Hilo’s Lyman Museum, housed in an 1839 historic missionary home, showcasing the natural and cultural history of Hawaii. This afternoon, we’ll return to Mauna Kea’s Onizuka Visitor’s Center before traveling to the summit, home to a variety of giant telescopes that employ revolutionary technologies. We have arranged a tour of Subaru, a visible-infrared telescope with a monolithic 8.2-meter mirror, housed in a

cylindrical state-of-the-art dome. Returning to the Visitors Center after the tour, we’ll have time for dinner and, for those interested, a journey back to the summit for second Mauna Kea sunset! For our last evening of stargazing, join Paul for a view of the summer Milky Way, with the hub of our galaxy in Sagittarius and Scorpius well placed high in the south.

  DAY 8 Sat, July 9                                                                                    B/D
Akaka Falls State Park

After breakfast we’ll depart Hilo for the Kona side of the Big Island. Our first stop will be at Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, which display a wide variety of orchids, palms, gingers, and other exotic plants — more than 2,000 species. We’ll then continue to Akaka Falls State Park, where water tumbles 420 feet into a deep gorge. A pleasant, half-mile loop will take us through a lush rainforest of philodendron vines, wild orchids, bamboo groves, and hanging heliconia to the 100-foot Kahuna Falls and farther on to breathtaking Akaka Falls, laden with ferns and other tropical vegetation. Late this afternoon we’ll return to the Kona Beach Hotel, where we’ll share a sumptuous farewell dinner.
