Hawaiian Fire
and Skies Itinerary |
|
|
| |
Day 4
Tue, July 5 Breakfast
Punaluu Black Sand Beach / Hawaii Volcanoes National Park |
|
| |
|
After our late-morning
checkout we’ll travel south to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. On the
way we’ll pass South Point — the southernmost town in the United
States — and stop in the village of Naalehu at the Punaluu Bakery,
famous for its sweet bread. Our next stop will be Punaluu Black Sand
Beach Park, the Black Pearl of the Big Island. Here we’ll see
endangered green sea turtles swimming in a protected cove or, if we’re
lucky, basking in sunshine on the black-sand beach lined by coconut
trees. Here you’ll also find some ancient fresh-water springs mixing
with the sea’s salty water — a true picture of paradise! As we climb
to 4,000 feet, we’ll enter the lush rainforest at the entrance to
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and our crater-view accommodations at
the historic Volcano House, nestled on the rim of Kilauea crater. If
it’s clear tonight, join Paul for stargazing near the hotel. |

B/L/D
Hawaii Volcanoes Summit Tour with volcano expert Steve
O'Meara |
|
| |
After breakfast, we’ll be
joined by Sky & Telescope contributing editor and volcano expert
Steve O’Meara for an exploration of Hawaii Volcanoes, including a stop at
the Hawaii Volcano Observatory Visitor’s Center. We’ll drive into the
caldera to see the Great Earthquake Crack and Halemaumau Crater. After
lunch in the village of Volcano, we’ll travel around the crater to see
Thurston Lava Tube before winding our way 20 miles down the famous Chain
of Craters Road to hunt for active lava flows. As we pass pit craters and
smoking cinder cones, the road hugs a cliff until it ends at a vast flow
of old lava that has crossed the road. Here we’ll park and hike out to any
active flow. Conditions permitting, we’ll be able to watch new earth
forming at our feet as we watch the stars overhead! |

Day 6
Thu, July 7
Breakfast
Hilo / University Science Park |
|
| |
After a breakfast and time for some final exploring, we’ll leave
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and descend through lush countryside to
Hilo, the Big Island’s largest city. Hilo is an old sugar town of quaint
houses and buildings now being lovingly restored to their former glory.
This afternoon we’ll visit the University Science Park, the headquarters
for many of the telescopes atop Mauna Kea, including Subaru. Enjoy this
evening in Hilo on your own. |
