Dear Traveler,
To journey to the Arctic in
summer is to discover a world of abundant wildlife and
otherworldly beauty, ice-capped peaks and picturesque fishing
villages. Magnificent whales turn arcs in the
water, while puffins, harp seals, and polar bears thrive along
the unspoiled seacoast. In the Land of the Midnight Sun, daylight
shimmers over majestic glaciers and
10,000-year-old icebergs, sculpted by wind and waves into
strange and beautiful shapes.
This summer the brand-new,
106-guest expedition cruise ship Orion
will embark on the Greenland and the Canadian
Arctic voyage to these spectacular northerly
regions. We invite you to join us as we
sail into lengthening sunshine from Greenland to
Newfoundland and Labrador to Montreal. There is simply no better
way to see these fascinating destinations than
by small-ship cruising. As a special treat, Orion
lets you visit onshore sites via Zodiac
landing craft for inspiring, up-close encounters.
In Greenland, discover a land of glaciers, tundra, and
ice fjords, as well as centuries-old fishing villages and a rich
treasure of wildlife. Visit Sisimiut above the
Arctic Circle, and explore this town of fishermen, artists and
multi-colored houses—and experience the wonder of the midnight sun. On
one of several expeditions aboard our Zodiac
landing craft, we’ll float among the icebergs and floes for an intimate
look at the Ilulissat Ice Fjord. Watch for
whales off Disko Island, where you’ll get a feel for
traditional Greenlandic culture in the historic village of
Godhavn.
You’ll also have a remarkable opportunity to explore
part of Canada’s youngest territory, Nunavut, created in 1999 and
peopled largely by the Inuit. Visit Broughton
Island where the Inuit, balancing modern needs with a time-honored
passion for the land, live among the polar
bears and caribou.
In Canada, we’ll sail along “Iceberg Alley,” famed for
its myriad ice giants in spring and summer.
Highlights include visits to the ancient Viking settlement L’Anse aux
Meadows on Newfoundland and to Red Bay, Labrador, a 16th-century
Basque whaling station. As
we journey south along the Gulf of St. Lawrence, watch for beluga, minke
and fin whales as well as gannets and puffins nesting on coastal
cliffs.
A masterpiece of
craftsmanship and engineering, the state-of-the-art Orion
was built to explore remote regions of
the world in safety and comfort. Your luxurious
home for this voyage is an exterior suite or stateroom equipped
with a private marble bathroom,
high-definition flat screen TV, DVD and CD player, direct Internet
access, mini-refrigerator, and large windows
for breathtaking views of Arctic panoramas and
ports of call. Also at your disposal are Orion’s lounges, library,
computer center, hair salon, boutique,
whirlpool, and spa with gym, sauna, and masseuse. A spacious restaurant
accommodates all guests at a single unassigned seating, and our Cosmos
Lecture Theater features a sophisticated
surround-sound system. Watch nature unfold from
the spacious observation lounge on the top deck
or view the
scenery from your suite or stateroom’s TV via
remote cameras atop the ship’s mast.
This once-in-a-lifetime
voyage brings you face-to-face with the extraordinary
splendor of the Arctic, one of the most pristine and captivating
regions on earth. Join us aboard Orion
this summer, and experience the scenery, the wildlife, the
cultures, and the magic of Greenland and the
Canadian Arctic. |
