Day 1   Sat, February 9, 2008         No Meals
Arrival in San José, Costa Rica
 

Upon arrival at San José’s Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) you will clear Customs and be transferred to our hotel in San Jose. The balance of the day and evening is free to enjoy on your own.

  Day 2   Sun, Feb 10                                                                                   B/L/D
Poas Volcano, La Paz Waterfall & La Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve
 
  After breakfast and check out, our guide and driver will meet us in the lobby of the hotel for our journey to Poas Volcano. En route to the volcano, we’ll travel along coffee plantations and farms growing strawberries, ferns and flowers. Arriving at Poas, join Steve for a one-kilometer walk to the volcano through lush vegetation full of exotic flowers and birds. We’ll view the volcanic caldera and crater lake, and even hike into rainforest.  
      Descending from Poas, we will journey to the Sarapiqui region for lunch and a stop to see the beautiful La Paz Waterfall. After check-in at our hotel this afternoon, you’ll have time to relax and explore the grounds on your own. After dinner we’ll drive to La Tirimbina Reserve for a view of the Reserve’s resident bat population. On the short, guided walk we will see mist nets used to gently catch these creatures for research.

 Day 3   Mon, Feb 11                                                                                    B/L/D
Selva Verde Rainforest
 
 
  After breakfast we’ll travel to La Selva Biological Station, recognized internationally as one of the premier facilities for rainforest research. In groups of 12 people per guide, we’ll spend 3+ hours this morning exploring on foot this rich bio-diverse habitat observing native plants, animals, insects and birds. Returning to the hotel for lunch, the balance of our day is free to join optional activities arranged through our guide, or take in a spa treatment or just enjoy the hotel’s wonderful gardens, river views and swimming pool.
 
     
  Day 4   Tue, Feb 12                                                                                    B/L/D
Peñas Blancas Rainforest River & Tabacón Hot Spring
 
 

After checkout this morning we will travel two hours to Peñas Blancas River for a peaceful paddle float down the river. Our guide will share educational and interesting explanations of the plants and animals we encounter on the float, which might include monkeys, sloths, iguanas, crocodiles and numerous tropical birds.
    After lunch we’ll arrive at famous Tabacón Hot Springs Resort, located in the shadow of mighty Arenal, Costa Rica’s most active and spectacular volcano. This resort is truly a paradise within a paradise. Hiking trails, warm and hot springs surrounded by lush vegetation, and beautiful vistas abound here. Arenal Volcano, together with the Resort’s surrounding tropical rainforest, provides a breathtaking setting unparalleled in the world. Join us this evening as we enjoy the Resort’s famous hot springs, followed by dinner and a lecture by Steve on mighty Arenal Volcano.

 Day 5   Wed, Feb 13                                                                                    B/L/D
Arenal Volcano
 
 

Today we will enjoy a most extraordinary view of the Arenal Volcano on a hike with Steve along the base of this marvelous “Mountain of Fire”. The hike will begin on the active side of the volcano, and will take us through the lush forest over recent lava flows to the destroyed area now in the process of regeneration. This moderate 2.5-hour hike will take us as close as five hundred meters from recent lava flows.
    Lunch today will be at Arenal Observatory Lodge, providing a view of the volcano crater that is just amazing, returning to Tabacón in the late afternoon.  Later we’ll drive to nearby Arenal Kioro lookout point for additional spectacular volcano views and dinner.

 
   
 Day 6   Thu, Feb 14                                                                                     B/L/D
El Silencio Cloud Forest
 
  This morning we bid farewell to Arenal and begin our journey back to San José. On the way we will stop in one of Costa Rica’s most unique habitats, a cloud forest. Located within the grounds of a beautiful hotel, El Silencio de Los Angeles cloud forest walk is a network of trails carefully engineered to allow maximum enjoyment of the plants, animals and birds in this habitat. With only 2.5% of the planet's cloud forest remaining, the unique energy of this cloud shrouded habitat is a marvel to behold. Late this afternoon we will return to San José for check-in to the hotel and our farewell dinner at nearby restaurant.
