Chile’s immense Atacama Desert is one of the
sunniest places on Earth. This region is so dry that some
regions haven’t had measurable rainfall in more than 20
years! Despite this desolation, lush oases dot the region,
allowing life to spring forth. The oasis village of San
Pedro de Atacama, at an elevation of almost 2,440 meters
(8,000 feet) above sea level and at 23° south latitude, is
the perfect base for our 4 nights of deep southern
stargazing under extremely dark skies. Add to this a very
special visit to Cerro Paranal to see the European Southern
Observatory’s Very Large Telescope — a quartet of 8.2-meter
(27-foot) reflectors — and you have a stargazer’s dream
vacation! |

This 7-day
exploration into the skies and desert of northern Chile, May
29–June 4, 2005, will be led by astronomer and award-winning
sky photographer Dennis Mammana, who will give lectures on
deep-sky observing and both terrestrial and celestial
photography.
Our days will begin in the mid- to late-morning, allowing
stargazers important rest, while our afternoons will include
excursions into the famed Atacama Desert, including the
striking landscape of the Valley of the Moon; the amazing
El Tatio geyser basin; the relaxing
thermal springs at Puritama; Flamingo National Reserve at
Atacama Salt Flat; the world’s largest open-pit copper mine
at Chuquicamata; and the picturesque village of Toconao.
This is your opportunity to view southern astronomical
treasures under arguably the best skies in the world, to see
the Southern Hemisphere’s premier observatory, and to visit
a remarkable assortment of otherworldly landscapes. Space is
limited, so make your reservation today! |
