Itinerary

Day 1  Tue, March 12, 2002
Fly to Fairbanks

     Flights from various North American cities to Fairbanks. (Call TravelQuest 800-830-1998, for details on flight arrangements.) Upon arrival, travelers will transfer to the Sophie Station Hotel, Fairbanks. At 8:00 PM, join us for an orientation and question/answer session on the week’s activities, the aurora and photography.

Overnight:  Sophie Station Hotel (5 nights)

Day 2  Wed, March 13
University of Alaska Museum/Aurora Aurora Viewing

     This morning we will tour the University of Alaska, Fairbanks campus to visit to the University’s excellent museum, the campus bookstore and lunch on your own at the Student Union. The balance of your day is free for exploring Fairbanks on your own.

      Each evening  over the next four nights we will depart the hotel at 8:30 PM for our carefully selected viewing site north of Fairbanks. Our viewing lodge is located 23-miles north of the city lights and features an incredible 270° view to the north, plenty of room inside to set-up gear, or relax sipping a hot drink between auroral displays. This is the perfect place to view the aurora! Depending on conditions and auroral activity, we will return to the hotel between 2:00-3:00 am.

Day 3  Thu, March 14
Aurora Predicting with Jan Curtis / Aurora Viewing

     This morning we will be joined by Jan Curtis of the Geophysical Institute. Jan will discuss global warming and the politics surrounding it, along with a lecture on how one can use the resources available on the web to better interpret solar activity, and how one can use this information to predict the likelihood of auroral activity. This evening we leave the hotel at 8:30 pm for Aurora Viewing.

Day 4  Fri, March 15
Poker Flat Research Range / Aurora Viewing

     Today we will travel north of Fairbanks for lunch at historic Chatanika Gold Camp. The camp was once the original bunkhouse and eatery for the men working on the old Gold Dredge 3. Following lunch we will tour nearby Poker Flat Research Range with Director Neal Brown. This evening we leave the hotel at 8:30 pm for Aurora Viewing.

Day 5  Sat. March 16
Free Day / Aurora Viewing

Today is free to experience Alaska as you wish. Try dog sledding, take a scenic drive into the interior or see the Sled Dog Competition and Ice Carving Championship. This evening we leave the hotel at 8:30 pm for our last night of Aurora Viewing.

Day 6  Sun, March 17
Fly home

     Transfers will be provided to Fairbanks Airport for your return flight home. Extra nights in Fairbanks are available at $80 per night, single or double occupancy. Call TravelQuest for details (800) 830-1998.
