Trip Activities
Viewing and photography of the Aurora Borealis is the main emphasis for this tour. For four nights, we will leave
the hotel around 8:30 PM to travel 23 miles north of Fairbanks’ city
lights to our specially selected viewing lodge. Our coach will be on
stand-by to provide mobility if clouds move in. With your gear ready,
you can relax in comfort between major bursts of auroral activity.
Depending upon conditions, we will return to the hotel between 2:00-3:00
am.
University of Alaska Museum, is an ideal starting point
for your visit to Alaska. The museum is divided into regional sections,
each containing detailed information about the culture, history and
natural history of each of the five regions in Alaska.
Referred to as “A window on space over the Western Arctic,” Poker Flat Research Range"
is the world’s largest overland rocket range. The only high altitude
rocket range in the US, it has many advantages to researchers, such as
over-flight and landing rights on a large land area, a 26,000,000 acre
impact zone and a complete meteorological rocket launch track.
There are five major launch pads, one equipped with a moveable
launcher enclosure, which is used as protection from severe winter
weather. More than 234 large, high altitude sounding rockets have been
launched since the facility was established.
We will be joined by Neal Brown, former director of Poker
Flat Research Range for a special behind the scenes tour of this
important facility.
Our trip coincides with the annual World
Ice Art Championships. View beautifully illuminated ice
sculptures on display, some reaching 25 ft. in height and weighing as
much as 2500 lb. The International Championship Sled
Dog Race also will be held in Downtown Fairbanks during our
stay. The world’s fastest mushers compete in the oldest continuously
run sled dog race in the world.
