Day 6 Thurs, Sept. 25                                                                           Breakfast
Barringer Meteor Crater – Anderson Mesa – Lowell Observatory

  More than a century
ago, Percival Lowell established a professional observatory in the northern Arizona town of Flagstaff, and astronomers have been flocking to the Grand Canyon State ever since. Clear skies
and remote mountain terrain provide Arizona with a
wide-open window
on the universe, and today it’s the focus of astronomical research in the continental U.S.

Meteor Crater

Late this morning we will go behind the scenes at the research facilities at Anderson Mesa, where astronomers from Lowell Observatory search for near-Earth asteroids and Kuiper Belt objects beyond Neptune. Anderson Mesa is also home to the U.S. Naval Observatory's prototype optical interferometer.
Our next stop will be famous Barringer Meteor Crater. The world's best-preserved impact site, this 3 1/44-mile crater was formed when a meteoroid slammed into the Earth some 50,000 years ago. We'll have time to explore the recently modernized Museum and Visitors Center and take a guided walk along the rim of the crater.

After dinner, we'll visit historic Lowell Observatory, where Percival Lowell studied Mars, Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto, and Vesto Slipher studied the redshifts of galaxies. Our tour will include a visit to the observatory's stately rotunda - Percival's library - and a glimpse through the famous 24-inch Clark refractor.

  Day 7 Fri, Sept. 26                                                                                B/L/D
Phoenix - Scottsdale

This morning we will leave the higher elevations of northern Arizona, for a scenic drive through Oak Creek Canyon and the town of Sedona, renowned for its magnificent, natural red-rock sculptures and pristine national forest. We will arrive in Phoenix in time for lunch and a special presentation by astronomer Jeff Hester. Jeff is a professor at Arizona State University and responsible for some of the Hubble Space Telescope's most spectacular images, including the "Pillars of Creation" view of the Eagle Nebula (M16). He is also a coauthor of Twenty-First Century Astronomy, a new college textbook. Join us this evening for a special farewell dinner.
