Kitt Peak National Observatory

One of the largest living laboratories in the world, Biosphere 2 is an airtight greenhouse covering more than 3 acres with 7.2 million cubic feet of volume. The facility contains several varied biomes - including a rain forest, a million-gallon salt-water ocean, and a coastal fog desert. In 1994 Biosphere 2 was converted from an experimental facility testing the feasibility of humans living in a closed ecosystem to an ecological laboratory and branch campus of Columbia University. Today, students use the facility to experiment on Earth systems on a relatively large scale. The center now supports all manner of scientific study, including astronomy. After breakfast, we'll tour this amazing facility.

After lunch we'll depart for a behind the scenes VIP tour at Kitt Peak National Observatory, part of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), and home to the most diverse collection of astronomical facilities in the world. The broad summit boasts 19 optical and infrared telescopes, two radio telescopes, and a solar telescope. We'll tour several of the major instruments and meet with leading researchers. We'll stay on the mountain through sunset and then be given a tour of the night sky by Visitor Center staff using their two large reflecting telescopes.
Overnight: Sheraton Hotel, Tucson (2 Nights)
