   Join
Sky & Telescope magazine and TravelQuest International on an exclusive charter flight to witness the total eclipse of the Sun over Antarctica on November 23, 2003. In partnership with LanChile Airlines, South America’s leading carrier, we will leave Punta Arenas, Chile, to intercept the Moon’s shadow over the Ice Continent.  Here is how it will work:

Eclipse Flight – Sunday, November 23rd

Meet fellow Eclipse Flight participants from around the world at the Punta Arenas Airport in the early afternoon for our 14-hour flight. Once over Antarctica we’ll experience 2 minutes 26 seconds of totality — 29 seconds more than is possible from the ground — with the Sun positioned 12° above the horizon and visible directly off the aircraft’s port (left) wing.
Our planned intercept altitude of 11.6 kilometers (38,000 feet) virtually assures that our view of this cosmic spectacle will be unhindered by clouds, press here to see simulation .   The flight plan calls for us to reach the centerline of the eclipse path (mideclipse) at 23:06:02 Universal Time at 78.7° south, 51.9° east. We will assume our final intercept heading approximately 7 minutes before totality begins and maintain it for at least a few minutes after it ends.

To further assure great eclipse viewing for everyone on board, we are limiting the capacity on LanChile’s brand-new 263-passenger Airbus 340 aircraft to no more than 76 observers. Before and after the eclipse, there will be plenty of room in the aircraft to get comfortable and enjoy the expert commentary on the eclipse and Antarctica’s history and natural wonders. We have even arranged for a flyover of the South Pole!
