Day 1 Mon, March 3, 2003      Reception
Fairbanks Arrival

     Arrivals from various cities around the world to Fairbanks, Alaska. Upon arrival, travelers will be transferred to the Sophie Station Hotel. Join us at 8:00 PM for a welcome reception and orientation to the upcoming week’s activities.
Overnight: Sophie Station Hotel (2 nights)


Day 2 Tue, Mar. 4                   Breakfast
Fairbanks – Aurora Viewing

     This morning, we will depart by motorcoach for a brief tour of Fairbanks, including the historic downtown area and the beautiful University of Alaska campus. We will visit the University’s excellent museum, explore the gift shop, and have lunch on our own at the Student Union.   
 
       This afternoon, join us for an in-depth aurora photography session with award-winning photographer Dennis Mammana. Discuss film, exposure times, and helpful hints for photography in the frigid Alaskan night. Later this evening, we will travel by motorcoach to a specially selected site well away from Fairbanks’s city lights for our first night of aurora viewing.

 
Day 3 Wed, Mar. 5                                                                   Breadfast, Lunch
Alaska Pipeline – Poker Flat – Chena Hot Springs

     After breakfast and check-out, we’ll depart by motorcoach to see the famous TransAlaskan Pipeline, located outside Fairbanks. We will continue through beautiful Alaskan countryside to historic Chatanika Gold Camp, where we’ll enjoy a down-home Alaska lunch buffet. Afterwards, we travel to nearby Poker Flat Research Range for a special behind-the-scenes tour.
     Early evening arrival at Chena Hot Springs Resort. Join us tonight for a
snow coach trip high atop Spring Creek Mountain, for an unforgettable evening under the northern lights.
Overnight: Chena Hot Springs Resort (3 nights)

Days 4-5 Thu-Fri, Mar. 6–7                                                       Breakfast Daily
Chena Hot Springs

     Over the next two days each traveler will receive a pass for unlimited use of the relaxing natural hot springs that make this resort so popular. For an additional fee, you can also try your hand at dog sledding, snow shoeing, ice skating, cross country skiing, or guided snowmobile and horse drawn sleigh rides. It’s your choice! Each evening, you can view the aurora from outside your hotel room, or for an additional fee take the snow coach back to Spring Creek Mountain. Never worry that you will miss an auroral display — upon request, the hotel staff will knock on your door when the northern lights appear!
     During these two days there will be lectures on the aurora, including an in-depth scientific discussion on its causes, as well as a visit with a native Eskimo who will share traditional folklore on the northern lights.

Day 6 Sat, Mar. 8                                                                    Breakfast, Dinner
Chena Hot Springs – Fairbanks

     Enjoy another day of adventure or relaxation at Chena Hot Springs. This afternoon our motorcoach will transfer us back to Fairbanks and the Sophie Station Hotel. Join us this evening for a special farewell dinner before our last night of aurora viewing. (Keep in mind that if you plan to go viewing this evening, you may not be back to the hotel until 3:00 AM, so schedule return flights accordingly.)

Day 7 Sun, Mar. 9                                                                   Breakfast
Fly home

     Transfers will be provided to Fairbanks Airport for your return flight home.
