  Trip Highlights

Viewing and photographing of the aurora borealis is the main emphasis of this tour. Over 5 nights we will have the opportunity to view the incredibly dark northern skies as well as the famed aurora. Our first and last nights of viewing will be at a specially selected lodge far from the lights of Fairbanks. This site provides an incredible 270° view to the north with plenty of room inside to set up gear, or relax sipping a hot drink between auroral displays. The remaining three nights of viewing will be from our lodging at Chena Hot Springs Resort. You can view from outside your hotel room, or walk to a nearby viewing hut. Never worry that you will miss a display — upon request, the hotel staff will knock on your door when the sky lights up!
As with all TravelQuest and Sky & Telescope tours, we have added bonus
features that
will make our
trip unique. For instance, we have made special arrangements for daily film pick-up and drop-off. This means you can view your aurora pictures on a daily basis, assuring
you the very best
photography
possible!

University of Alaska Museum is an ideal starting point for our visit to Alaska. The museum is divided into regional sections, each containing detailed information about the culture, history, and natural history of each of the five major regions in Alaska.

Referred to as “a window on space over the western arctic,” Poker Flat Research Range is the world’s largest overland rocket range. The only high-altitude rocket range in the U.S., it offers many advantages to researchers, such as overflight and landing rights on a large land area, a million-acre recovery zone, and complete meteorological support. There are five launch pads, including one equipped with a moveable launcher enclosure, which is used as protection from severe winter weather. More than 234 large, high-altitude sounding rockets have been launched since the facility was established. Join us on a behind-the-scenes tour of this facility.

Explore the aurora from various perspectives. Our exclusive enrichment lectures will provide scientific explanations of the auroral phenomenon and the Sun-Earth connection more generally, how to predict and photograph displays, as well as the ancient lore of the native people.
